Mostert scores comeback Spa 24 class win

Walkinshaw Andretti United star Chaz Mostert has tasted international success overnight in Belgium, winning his class at the famous 24 Hours of Spa.

Driving the #75 Mercedes-AMG for SunEnergy1 Racing, the team that claimed this year’s LIQUI MOLY Bathurst 12 Hour, Mostert prevailed in the Pro-Am class.

It comes three years after Mostert scored a class victory with BMW at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

Mostert raced in partnership with Nicky Catsburg, Martin Konrad and Adam Osieka, with the team forced to start from pit lane.

The team suffered a major setback pre-qualifying, with a crash earlier in the week seeing owner/driver Kenny Habul withdrawn from the event, along with the team’s original entry.

The replacement car arrived from Germany just in time for the Friday night pre-race warm-up.

The disruptive lead up to the race was remarkably no barrier for the team, as they went on to drive to class victory in the gruelling endurance test.

Mostert has now won at Spa and Daytona

Mostert's fellow Supercars driver Anton de Pasquale however was not as fortunate, with his Grove Racing Porsche limping home to 45th outright and 13th in the Bronze class.

De Pasquale raced with Penrite Racing owners, Stephen and Brenton Grove, as well as former Triple Eight Race Engineering endurance driver Earl Bamber.

The Porsche team spent an extensive slab of time in the garage repairing the car's floor after an on-track incident during the 16th hour.

At the front of the field, the fight for outright victory was a 24-hour thrill ride.

Victory was eventually claimed by the #98 Rowe Racing BMW M4 GT3 driven by Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann and Nick Yelloly.

The race-long fight at the front saw multiple lead changes with BMW and Audi dominating large chunks of the race.

The two brands ultimately made it to the podium, split by the #88 Mercedes-AMG driven by three-time Bathurst 12 Hour hero Jules Gounon.

The 75th running of the historic 24 Hours of Spa endurance race also doubled as Round 3 of the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

The global GT3 series started at Bathurst in February and will conclude with the fifth and final round, the Gulf 12 Hours in Dubai in December.

Mostert and De Pasquale will be back in action later this week as the Repco Supercars Championship travels to the NTI Townsville 500.
