  • Driver banter ahead of defining round in 2024 championship fight

  • Brown leads Broc Feeney by 204 points, Mostert 225 points down

In the lead-up to a defining round in the 2024 championship fight, Ford stars Chaz Mostert and Cam Waters both couldn't resist making cheeky sledges to points leader Will Brown.

Brown arrives at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 armed with a chance to clinch the title, with Broc Feeney, Mostert and Waters his only remaining rivals for the crown.

With 600 points left to win, and 150 points per race, Brown leads Feeney by 204 points, with Mostert 225 down. Waters, meanwhile, is an outside chance, 465 points adrift.

The trailing trio need a Brown slip-up to put the leader under pressure heading into the final round, with both Ford drivers joking they’ll put it into their own hands.

Speaking to media at Wednesday’s event at Tedder Avenue, Mostert said: “I'm just gonna lick the stamp this weekend and send it. And if Will Brown turns down in on me, I'm just gonna send him out into the wall.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Waters told Supercars.com: "I just need to take out all the cars in front of me, every race really, and just keep winning."

Mostert — ceded 144 points to Brown over the course of Sandown and Bathurst— is hoping for more than his eighth and 13th from last year’s round, and is a two-time winner at Surfers Paradise.

"This track for 250km racing in a concrete jungle and how demanding it is on the drivers and the cars, we have to try and go into a bit of conservation mode,” Mostert said.

“It is a really tough, gruelling race, especially if your car is being a little bit hard to handle around here, it becomes really long. So hopefully we can dial that car in and make my job a bit easier."

Waters, who beat Mostert in one of the races of the season at the last street round in Townsville, is even more confident, given he has runs on the board on the Gold Coast following his thrilling defeat of Shane van Gisbergen last October.

"I think we can definitely go back-to-back. We can definitely win,” the Tickford Racing driver said.

"We were fast here last year. The car's been fast on street tracks this year, so we're here to just win races.

“We had an awesome battle with Shane, it was awesome to get that win… hopefully we can replicate that this year. "The risk versus reward here on the streets of Gold Coast is pretty up there, so it's a lot of fun.

“It's one of the most demanding tracks we go to through the year. Obviously there's no room for error with all the walls being so close, and then the kerbs as well.

“There's no real time to rest, so it's pretty hard on the drivers, but I think that's what makes the track so cool.”

The 2024 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 on October 25-27. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
