Erebus engineers George Commins, Tom Moore to depart team
Commins, Moore have engineered both Erebus cars since 2021
Both engineers set to follow Brodie Kostecki to DJR
Erebus Motorsport CEO Barry Ryan has confirmed lead race engineers George Commins and Tom Moore will both depart the squad at the end of the season.
Recently reported in the media, Commins is set to follow Brodie Kostecki to Dick Johnson Racing, with Moore also linked to the famous Ford team. It comes as current DJR engineer Perry Kapper readies to join Supercars, with Richard Harris linked to Walkinshaw Andretti United.
Commins and Moore have been Erebus’ race engineers since 2021, the former leading Kostecki to championship and Bathurst glory. Moore engineered Will Brown to five wins between 2021 and 2023, before overseeing recruit Jack Le Brocq this season.
Erebus recently struck a deal with DJR to supply chassis to the team, and will now see its primary engineers join Kostecki at the Mustang squad.
While saddened to see Commins and Moore move on, Ryan was proud of both engineers, who have delivered 13 race wins, championships and Bathurst glory to the team.
“We're sort of expected now to be that team that just gives away all our people we train up,” Ryan told media in Adelaide.
"I'm proud again of George and Tom. They're getting an opportunity to go with another challenge. Young Tom, he's been with us for seven years now. He was a second year uni student when he came to us.
“We didn't think he was going to make it in the first two years, we chucked him in at the deep end with Will Brown in 2021, and he's one of the best engineers in pit lane now. So, I'm really sad to see him go.
"When he came up to my office and he was a bit nervous, I said,' Tom, you've got to go and do it, you've got to go and give it a try'. I was probably two or three years in teams and I jumped around trying to get to the top.
“He was loyal to us for seven years, that's amazing. He needs another experience to realise the grass isn't the greener, and if it is, good luck to him.
"I think it will be huge for that team to get someone of Tom's calibre and I'm really sad to lose him, as I am George.”
News of Commins following Kostecki is nothing new in Supercars, with Adam De Borre notably joining Chaz Mostert when the star driver joined Walkinshaw Andretti United in 2020.
"George is going with the driver, so that's sort of the done thing these days, so you sort of get used to that,” Ryan said.
"Tom sort of hurt, but yeah, I get it, and I'm really proud of him.”
