Late rain cost Erebus a one-two: Brown

Will Brown believes Erebus Motorsport was on track for an historic one-two finish before rain arrived in Sydney on Saturday.

Brown and teammate Brodie Kostecki finished seventh and eighth in the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight opener.

The race was won by series leader Shane van Gisbergen, who was sixth and 17 seconds from the lead with 10 laps remaining.

Brown started the 64-lap race in 16th after a poor qualifying effort, only to bolt on Super Soft tyres under yellow and race towards the front in the second stint.

Cameron Waters and Brown gapped the field on their Super Softs before light rain arrived on lap 38.

Rain returned and intensified on lap 57, with van Gisbergen and teammate Jamie Whincup the beneficiaries.

Waters and Brown finished third and seventh, with Kostecki - who was charged towards the two in the closing laps - dropping to eighth.

“First stint wasn’t great, but the Safety Car really helped us,” said Brown, who won Race 28 the week before.

“The [Super] Soft tyre stint was mega, had an awesome stint, they lasted 32 laps.

“We really didn’t think they’d last that long.

“The last bit was really hectic; I thought we were racing for a win there, catching Cam.

“Four laps to go, the rain came out and the guys on Softs came back at us.

“It was awesome to see Brodie catching us, and I really think the team was one for a one-two.”

Brown chases Waters

Waters, who recorded his first podium since he won July's WD-40 Townsville SuperSprint finale, was confident he could have held off Brown.

However, the Tickford Racing driver also admitted the rain also hampered his charge.

“I would have had a pretty good shot,” said Waters, who led 39 laps on Saturday.

“I think Will was coming, he was probably a little bit quicker than us, but you can block pretty easy around here as well, so I would have made the Mustang pretty wide if the time came.

“But it rained and it all played out, so still super excited and pumped to get the podium.”
