The fans have spoken, and have named their greatest Kiwi driver in ATCC/Supercars history.

In celebration of Supercars' return to New Zealand, fans were asked who was the best driver from New Zealand to come to Australia and take on the world's best touring car championship.

In a free Supercars.com poll for MySupercars members that attracted over 5000 votes, three-time champion Scott McLaughlin led the way with 38% of the vote.

Here’s how the voting broke down amongst the top five:

    • Scott McLaughlin, 38%

    • Jim Richards, 28%

    • Shane van Gisbergen, 23%

    • Greg Murphy, 7%

    • Other, 4%

McLaughlin won three straight championships between 2018 and 2020 amid a dominant period for DJR Team Penske. In four seasons with the Ford squad, McLaughlin won 48 races and claimed 59 poles.

Remarkably, to this weekend's event, now IndyCar championship contender McLaughlin has more wins than any other Ford driver in ATCC/Supercars history.

McLaughlin's cherry on top was a stunning Bathurst victory, the last of a then record 18 wins in his dominant 2019 season.

Contemporary rival Shane van Gisbergen was third in the poll with 23%, behind the legendary Jim Richards on 28%. McLaughlin, Richards and van Gisbergen combine for 10 championships, 11 Bathurst victories and 159 race wins.

Four-time Bathurst winner Greg Murphy was fourth with 7% of the vote. Murphy won nine of his 28 championship races in New Zealand, and delivered perhaps the sport's most single famous moment with his iconic 'Lap of the Gods' in 2003.

Supercars track action in Taupō will commence with two practice sessions on Friday April 11. Tickets are on sale.
