Sydney format twist for first ever Gen3 night race

16 Jul 2023
Track schedule locked in for first Gen3 race under lights

The Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight will feature two races of different lengths as Supercars readies for racing under lights.

The track schedule for the highly anticipated first-ever night race between the Gen3 Chevrolet Camaros and Ford Mustangs has been officially released.

Tickets for the July 28-30 event are on sale now for the Sydney Motorsport Park event.

The inaugural night race of the Gen3 era will bring a thrilling new dimension to the championship, which reached its midway point at the NTI Townsville 500.

The Saturday night encounter on July 29 will see the new Supercars go head-to-head under the Sydney Motorsport Park lights in a 51-lap race.

The action continues Sunday July 30, with a race held in the afternoon, spanning 36 laps.

The 51-lap night race, Race 18 of the 2023 season, will have a minimum two-stop requirement, as well as refuelling.

It adds yet another key strategy element for teams to grapple with the new Gen3 cars, given refuelling returned in Townsville.

Supercars CEO Shane Howard said: "The Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight will feature the very best of on track entertainment for the sport.

Shane van Gisbergen wins the 2022 night race

"With different strategies required for both races, and the element of night racing, there will be something for everyone at one of our most famous circuits later this month.”

Defending Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen has a chance to join Mark Skaife atop the all-time winners list at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Skaife holds the all-time win record in Sydney with 10 victories, while van Gisbergen is an eight-time winner at the same circuit.

Van Gisbergen’s team, Red Bull Ampol Racing, could also be celebrating in Sydney. The Brisbane-based squad sits on 248 all-time Supercars race wins, and two victories in Sydney would see them become the first team ever to claim 250 wins in the Championship.

Standing in the Chevrolet team’s way is Shell V-Power Racing Team Ford driver Anton De Pasquale, who claimed the most recent Supercars victory in Townsville earlier this month.

De Pasquale has taken eight ARMOR ALL Pole Positions and five race wins at the Sydney circuit.

Brad Jones Racing driver Jack Smith will rack up a career milestone in Sydney. The Gold Coast born, Albury-based former NZ V8 Touring Car Championship winner will record his 50th round start in the Repco Supercars Championship.

Heading into Sydney SuperNight round, the top four in the championship are covered by just 72 points.

Erebus Motorsport driver Will Brown leads teammate Brodie Kostecki by seven points ahead of Broc Feeney, who is 26 points down in third.

Van Gisbergen, who recently brought up 500 Supercars starts, is 72 points down in fourth.

This year’s Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight will feature one of the biggest support programs on the calendar, including the open-wheel racing of S5000, the GT World Challenge Australia, Porsche Challenge Cup Series, Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Series and V8 SuperUtes.

Tickets are now on sale through Ticketek and Supercars.com.

The Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight is proudly supported by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
