Brodie Kostecki cites Bend sweep as key to title run
Kostecki claimed two poles, won all three races at OTR SuperSprint
Erebus driver leads Shane van Gisbergen by 131 points
If Brodie Kostecki takes out the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship in Adelaide, he will look back to another round in South Australia as being key to his hopes.
The Erebus Motorsport heads to the VAILO Adelaide 500 in the box seat to win the title, with Kostecki 131 points ahead of Shane van Gisbergen.
Kostecki led from Albert Park to Townsville, where a mechanical issue vaulted Will Brown, who won the race, into the points lead.
The #99 Coca-Cola Camaro driver snatched the lead back with victory in Sydney, and after the Eastern Creek event, led Brown by 41 points, van Gisbergen by 59, and Broc Feeney by 67.
In one weekend, Kostecki put 78 points on van Gisbergen, 159 on Feeney and 217 on Brown, who had a shocker. From there, Kostecki's lead hasn't dipped below 100 points.
Erebus, meanwhile, extended its lead over Triple Eight from 43 to 107 points, and leads by 170 points heading to Adelaide
Speaking to Triple M Adelaide, Kostecki cast his gaze to adding two more trophies to his cabinet in Adelaide, and cited The Bend as the weekend that helped him keep his rivals at arm’s length.
“I’ve really enjoyed this year, it’s been an awesome year for myself,” he said.
Come the OTR SuperSprint at The Bend Motorsport Park, and Kostecki won three races and claimed two poles to stamp his authority back on the 2023 title fight.
“I’m enjoying every minute of it, and there’s two more races to go, that means there’s two more trophies.
“I had an awesome round at The Bend earlier on in the year, and was able to win all three races, which set up the championship run so far.”
Kostecki has taken more wins (six), podiums (18) and pole positions (eight) than any other driver this season, with van Gisbergen his only barrier to 2023 glory.
However, when asked about his 131-point advantage, Kostecki replied: “I just focus on trying to win races.
“It’s the only thing you can focus on. Erebus has done a great job of giving me great equipment this year to do what I love doing.
“There’s two more trophies up for grabs, and there’s this big one here in front of me. It’d be cool to win this one.”
On his own development, Kostecki added: “You always evolve and get better… we’ve obviously had a big change this year with the Gen3 cars.
“The team’s done a fantastic job of putting our program together and giving me a fast race car to be able to deliver the team results.”
Supercars action at the VAILO Adelaide 500 will commence on Thursday November 23.
