When 2021 calendar will take shape

How the 2021 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship may look should become clearer by October, says the sport’s CEO Sean Seamer.

A revised 2020 calendar was unveiled at the weekend, with on-track action resuming at Sydney Motorsport Park on June 27-28.

Events at Sandown and Auckland will run two weeks either side of Christmas before a Bathurst finale on February 5-7.

Seamer has long been known to be keen on the idea of a summer schedule to get away from competing against the powerhouse AFL and NRL football codes.

The timing of the COVID-19 lockdown means the 2020 championship will predominantly run across the back half of the year and into the start of 2021.

However, Seamer is not committing to a permanent shift to a summer season just yet.

“No, not yet,” Seamer said.

“Our priority is delivering a good event on the 27-28 June weekend to get going again.

“We'll start to look at how 2021 is going to work once we're up and running again and we've got a better understanding of the world and restrictions that surround us at that time.

“Expect us to start to have an opinion on 2021 closer to the Bathurst 1000.”

The Great Race has retained its original planned date of October 8-11.
