Matt Payne tops Additional Drivers Session at Sydney Motorsport Park

Teenager Matt Payne has topped the Additional Drivers Session at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The New Zealander, who was only confirmed to run in the session for Kelly Grove Racing on Friday morning, pipped Lee Holdsworth by 0.081s.

The session was the year's first aimed at co-drivers ahead of the Repco Bathurst 1000.

Co-drivers previously cut official pre-Bathurst testing laps of Sydney Motorsport Park on Tuesday after a series of stand-alone tests throughout the year.

The 40-minute session was held ahead of opening Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight practice for full-timers.

Fiore set the early pace aboard Todd Hazelwood’s #14 Cub Cadet Brad Jones Racing Commodore on a 1:32.116s.

Through 10 minutes, Fiore led Zak Best (#5 Truck Assist Tickford Mustang), Chris Pither (#96 Coca-Cola BJR Commodore), David Wall (#4 SCT Logistics BJR Commodore) and James Moffat (#5 Monster Energy Tickford Mustang).

Pither shot to the top on a 1:32.046s midway through the session, before he was unseated by Thomas Randle (#44 Boost Mobil Tickford Mustang).

With four minutes remaining, Payne - who topped the earlier Super2 session - used his Softs to fire the #26 Penrite Kelly Grove Racing Mustang the top on a 1:31.095s.

Holdsworth, who will race with Chaz Mostert in Bathurst, dropped the #25 Mobil 1 Appliances Online Walkinshaw Andretti United Commodore into second.

Kurt Kostecki moved the #34 Matt Stone Racing entry into third ahead of Matt Campbell, who made it a Kelly Grove one-four result.

Red Bull Ampol Racing duo Garth Tander and Craig Lowndes were 22nd and 23rd, but didn’t set a lap on the Soft compound rubber.

Shell V-Power Racing Team pair Alex Davison and Tony D’Alberto ended the session 12th and 17th.

Jack Perkins, who will race with Will Brown in Bathurst, ended the session 24th and 3.2s off the pace.

D’Alberto and James Golding (#20 DEWALT Team 18 Commodore) clocked the most laps of the session with 21 tours apiece. Davison recorded 20 laps.

The full-time drivers will return to the track for Practice 1 of the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight at 7:45pm AEDT. Click here to view the race schedule.
