Chaz Mostert shuts down title talk despite strong form
Mostert 105 points behind championship leader Will Brown
WAU star has clawed back 174 points in two rounds
Chaz Mostert is not thinking about the championship just yet after mounting a mid-season fightback, saying he has to be "aggressive" in pursuit of more wins.
Mostert has powered back into championship contention with a run of four straight podiums, headlined by two wins in Sydney.
The Walkinshaw Andretti United driver is now 105 points behind leader Will Brown, having been 279 points behind after Darwin.
Mostert has reason to believe he is a genuine championship contender, given he has never been closer to the points lead after seven rounds in his Supercars career.
However, when asked by Supercars.com if he his thinking about this year's title, Mostert said: “I just don't think about that stuff.
“For me, it's just purely trying to win, get on the top step, beat the other guys, and the rest kind of looks after itself.
"So we've just got to be aggressive. That's our motto at the moment. And as a whole team, we're doing that and we'll stick to that.”
Mostert's performances in Sydney, with the two-time Bathurst winner twice passing rivals to win, led to mixed takes from legends Mark Skaife and Garth Tander over his prospects.
Tander highlighted WAU's previous struggles on the Super Soft tyre, which will be used at the next round in Tasmania.
Mostert, who claimed his first win with WAU at Symmons Plains in 2021, said the upcoming event will be a "massive test" as he looks to keep pace with the championship.
"Every track's different, as we've seen this year,” Mostert said.
"So, we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves. We've just got to keep focusing on the next circuit, the next session, and keep building that momentum.
"Tassie is going to be a massive test for us, even though this weekend was so great, and we'll reflect on it at some point, we're going to just keep our eyes forward and keep trying to build the momentum.
“Looking forward to Tassie because it will be a challenge for us compared to what happened at Darwin.”
On Tasmania itself, he added: "It's just being comfortable with the car out the gate and then trying to work on from it there. So we'll try to roll out our best car, what we think we're going to need.
"Hopefully it's somewhere in the window, but there is super tough. Margins are so close. If you don't feel comfortable around there, you won't be in the fight."
The 2024 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint on August 16-18. Tickets for the event are on sale now. Live coverage can be found on Foxtel, with live streaming available on Kayo. Highlights will be shown on the Seven Network and 7plus. International viewers can follow all the action on Superview.
