Feeney secures Super2 title, Boys wins chaotic finale

Broc Feeney has won the 2021 Dunlop Series with a second-place finish behind Jordan Boys in an incident-filled Bathurst finale.

Feeney started from fifth and, with a 147-point lead, only needed to finish the race to secure the title.

Only Jayden Ojeda could prevent Feeney from winning the title, but it was put beyond doubt when he collided with MW Motorsport teammate Tyler Everingham.

The Race 2 grid was set off the combined practice times, with Boys and Ojeda sharing the front row.

Ojeda made a poor start and fell into the clutches of Everingham on the run to Turn 1.

However, the two Altimas made contact; Ojeda was turned into the wall across the face of Everingham, who came to a stop.

Ojeda managed to continue, only to pull to the side of the track further along the lap.

The BP Ultimate Safety Car was deployed to retrieve both cars; Boys had retained his lead, with Aaron Seton and Feeney dropping into second and third.

With Ojeda out, Feeney’s title win was assured. However, he made little effort to cruise to the end, and hounded Seton for second.

Boys enjoyed a 1.8s margin over the champion-elect once Feeney cleared Seton on lap 4.

Seton, meanwhile, fell into the clutches of Zak Best, with Matt McLean and Matt Payne keeping a watching brief behind.

Boys and Feeney dropped those behind; by lap 6, Seton was 4.1s from the lead.

Feeney continued to chip away into Boys’ lead, which was 1.5s on lap 7.

However, all margins were erased once the Safety Car was called for Jaylyn Robotham’s beached car at Murray’s Corner.

Feeney hounded Boys at the lap 10 restart; the latter made a slight error at Turn 1, encouraging a run from Feeney.

Boys held sway through Griffin’s Bend, but the Safety Car was called for a third time when Super3 driver Steven Page found the wall at McPhillamy.

Page, at the tail of the queue, made heavy contact with the concrete wall, slid across the sand and nudged the tyre barrier.

The race was called early, with Boys following the Safety Car across the line to secure his first victory of the season.

Boys had initially recorded victory at the Repco Mt Panorama 500, only to have it taken away weeks later.

However, the biggest smiles were reserved for Feeney, who helped Triple Eight Race Engineering to its first Super2 title since 2011.
