Jaxon Evans named in strong Porsche line-up for Spa 24
Kiwi to make second start in race after 2022 debut
Evans resumes Supercars campaign in Perth this weekend
Brad Jones Racing rookie Jaxon Evans has been named in a powerhouse Porsche line-up for the upcoming 24 Hours of Spa.
The Supercars driver, formerly a star Porsche factory driver, will reunite with Phantom Global Racing at the Spa event, which will be held on June 26-30.
It marks a second Spa 24 start for Evans, who debuted in the event in 2022 in a Herberth Motorsport Porsche. The Kiwi is hunting his first finish in the race, with the Herberth entry retiring from the 2022 race.
Last weekend, Evans competed with Phantom Global Racing at the GT World Challenge Asia round at Thailand's Chang International Circuit.
It was Evans's Asian racing debut, with the 2018 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia champion racing with Chinese driver Sun JingZu.
It continues what is proving a busy year for Evans, who is also racing an Arise Racing Ferrari in GT World Challenge Australia, having debuted with Phantom Global Racing at February's Repco Bathurst 12 Hour.
Phantom Global Racing will have support from Timo Bernhard’s Team 75 outfit at Spa, with the Belgium event the second round of the 2024 Intercontinental GT Challenge following the Bathurst 12 Hour.
Evans will race at Spa with factory Porsche driver Thomas Preining and Joel Eriksson, with Evans and Eriksson combining with Bastian Buus to finish fourth at February's Bathurst race.
“It’s great to finally get the opportunity to race in the legendary Spa 24 race and with such team and teammates," Phantom Global Racing Team Director Martin Young said.
“It’s been a dream since a very long time to take part in this race and to finally being able to do it feels surreal.
"I believe we are in a very good position for a strong result and I’m very much looking forward to get my first taste of our package next week on the official test days.”
Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific Managing Director Alexandre Gibot added: “After a fantastic debut for Phantom Global Racing earlier this year at the Bathurst 12 Hour, we are happy to once again work with the team as they take on their second Intercontinental GT Challenge race.
"Phantom Global Racing have put together a competitive line-up together with Thomas, Jaxon and Joel, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the team take on the Prologue next week in advance of the main event in just over a month from now."
The 24 Hours of Spa will be held two weeks after Round 6 of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship, the betr Darwin Triple Crown. Evans will resume his campaign at this weekend's Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint, at a circuit he has never raced at before.
However, Evans said last weekend's Thailand event was a great chance at more seat time. The New Zealander is coming off a maiden top 10 in Supercars, in what was just his third event as a full-time driver in the championship.
"It was great to be back in a competitive and healthy GT field. A very different style of racing in comparison to Supercars, but valuable race miles ahead of Perth.
“A big thanks to Phantom Global Racing and Porsche Motorsport Asia Pacific for the opportunity.
"Now, my attention returns to Supercars and I’m really excited to jump back in the SCT Logistics Camaro this weekend. Perth always seems to put on a good show when it comes to racing so I can’t wait to get stuck in.
“I’m aiming to build on our Taupō form and improve our qualifying car to make our lives a little easier come race time.
“It’s a short circuit but has a nice flow. I turned my first laps there with Arise Racing GT a month or two ago, so I know where the track goes. We just need to maximise each session and continue to move forward."
Tickets for the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint are on sale now. Track action will commence on Friday. International viewers can follow all the action on Superview.
