Nick Percat has explained his sporting act to check on the welfare of Will Davison following his major crash in Repco Bathurst 1000 qualifying.

Davison suffered a big crash at the end of Boost Mobile Qualifying, with the Shell V-Power Ford clouting the wall at The Dipper.

Percat aborted his own qualifying efforts, pulled over near Davison’s car, and checked on his fellow driver. Davison was later cleared of injuries at the on-site medical centre.

Speaking after returning to pit lane, Percat — who qualified 13th — said: “It all happens very fast when you’re on a lap to try and sneak yourself into the Shootout.

“I’m very good friends with Will, basically grew up with him in Melbourne when I first joined Walkinshaw.”

Davison managed to walk away from the accident under his own steam, but made a visit to the circuit medical centre.

Percat said recounted the scary scenes of Tasmania 2017, when Davison suffered a back injury in a scary multi-car pile-up.

The Matt Stone Racing driver also hailed the in-car warning system, which prevented further incident as Davison’s car lay stricken on the side of the track.

"I just had flashes of his Tassie crash with his lower back,” said Percat, the 2011 Bathurst winner.

"I thought he'd had a head-on, to be fair. I thought, ‘This is no good for his lower back’.

"I just got to him as quick as I could. I know as a driver you don't want to feel trapped or anything, so just try and help him out and he's a good mate.

"The moment he said he was alright, I said 'yeah, just have a seat here in case there's a bit of adrenaline still coming off'.

"But glad to see he was alright, obviously probably a bit winded. It's biting hard this weekend, the Mountain."

Matt Payne claimed provisional pole in the session, which also featured a big crash for David Reynolds. Supercars will return to the track on Saturday morning, with co-driver only Practice 5 at 10:05am AEDT. Tickets for the Repco Bathurst 1000 are on sale now.
