Super Trucks readying for blockbuster Townsville return

The return of the Boost Mobile Stadium Super Trucks to the Reid Park Street Circuit will add to an already blockbuster NTI Townsville 500 weekend.

The July 9-11 event will feature a bumper entertainment program, with Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson to perform in the all-new Saturday Night Thrills event.

The high-octane Super Trucks will also return to Townsville, having missed out in 2020.

It comes after the series returned to Tasmania last month, with Boost-backed Supercars drivers James Courtney and Brodie Kostecki sampling the vehicles.

Super Trucks ace and Bathurst 1000 winner Paul Morris was delighted to see the category make a return to the North Queensland event.

On Tuesday, Morris, driving in an event-inspired livery, drove a Super Truck over a jump atop Castle Hill.

"On the track in Townsville we’ll be hitting that jump wide at 120 [km/h] and we’ll be jumping close to 200 feet," he said.

"I think we were last here in 2017. It was a crowd favourite. You couldn’t walk about the pits.

"The best thing about these things; the kids love them.

"It brings new people to the circuit, and shows the enjoyment of car racing.”

Speaking about the Tuesday jump, Morris said: "We actually came up here last night when we landed and had a good look around and thought, ‘Okay, how are we going to make this work?'

"There’s not much room for error here, I’ve got to stop before I hit the hill over there!

"We’ve got to let it loose and fly the thing… to do it in this situation is amazing. We love coming here.”

The Repco Supercars Championship field will return to Townsville for the NTI Townsville 500 across July 9-11.
