Super3 young guns set for hometown title fight

Two local drivers will fight for the Dunlop Super3 Series title at the upcoming VALO Adelaide 500.

The 2022 Super3 season is racing towards a thrilling conclusion after five rounds of racing.

The infamous street circuit will be tackled by a strong field of young guns for its final round of 2022 across December 1-4. Tickets are on sale now.

South Australia will have strong representation in the Super3 finale, with local talents Kai Allen and Brad Vaughan to go head-to-head for outright honours.

Mount Gambier-born Allen leads fellow South Australian rookie Vaughan by 66 points heading into their home event.

The teenagers have exchanged blows throughout the season, having shared the Super3 series lead following the opening round in Sydney.

Allen has since won six of the nine races and taken a record nine consecutive Super3 pole positions.

Allen's haul is the most in a single season in Super3 category history.

Allen and Vaughan finished first and second respectively in the shortened Bathurst opener last month.

With the second race cancelled due to torrential rainfall at Mount Panorama, Allen retained his slender lead.

It ensured the 2022 Super3 title fight would come down to the wire between two of Adelaide's homegrown heroes. 

The December 1-4 event marks a first for the 17-year-old Allen, who will make his Super3 debut on Adelaide's streets.

With a maximum of 300 points left to win, Allen knows he needs to rise to the challenge.

“I’m really excited, it’s my home event, so it’s really cool,” the Eggleston Motorsport driver told Supercars.com.

“I know Brad will keep me on my heels and be putting pressure on me.

“I have never raced in Adelaide before, so I’m doing a bit of research on the track and watching some onboard footage, but I can't wait.

“It should be hard racing, there’s not much tyre degradation, so we are 100 per cent racing the whole way through.

“The concrete canyon is going to be very scary, so I’m just going to go out there, try my best and give my best, and may the best man win on the day.”

After stints in the Hyundai Excel and Toyota 86 Series, Allen made his Super3 debut in March.

The two-time Australian National Kart Champion claimed 12 state karting titles before making the switch to tin top racing.

The teenager completed an evaluation day with the Shell V-Power Racing Team at Queensland Raceway in May. 

The rising star, who will progress to Super2 with Eggleston Motorsport in 2023, grew up attending the iconic street race.

"I’ve been watching it since I was young,” Allen said of the Adelaide 500.

"I've been there a few times when I was about seven or eight years old, saying I was going to race there someday, and now my dreams have come true.

"It’s one of my favourite events that I've been to, it's just a cool atmosphere and because it’s been away for a while, hopefully, it's going to be bigger and better than ever.

"My family, a few friends, and the people who have helped me out back when I was karting are coming up too, which is really cool.

"Some of them haven't seen me race so they are going to make the trip from Mount Gambier up to Adelaide, so there will be a lot of support behind me.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do on the home turf."

The 2022 Repco Supercars Championship and Dunlop Series seasons will conclude at the VALO Adelaide 500.
