  • Cam Waters wants to put pressure on series leaders

  • Waters fourth, 386 points behind leader Will Brown

  • Tickford driver was 515 points down after Darwin

Tickford Racing driver Cam Waters is determined to put the heat on the championship leaders as he aims to claw back more ground in the title fight.

Triple Eight star Will Brown leads the in-form Chaz Mostert by 105 points heading to Tasmania, with Brown’s teammate Broc Feeney 48 points behind the Walkinshaw Andretti United driver.

Fourth-placed Waters is 386 points behind Brown, but was as far back as 515 points after Darwin.

The Ford star arrives in Tasmania off the back of three podiums in four races, including a win in Townsville. In that span, Mostert (567 points) and Waters (522) clawed back crucial ground on Brown (393) and Feeney (348).

With 1510 points still to win in the final five rounds, Waters is an outside chance, and said he needs to be aggressive to put the pressure back on the leaders.

“All year, it's been about trying to find some car speed and be consistent. We've done that the last few rounds, which has been great,” Waters told Supercars.com.

“It's great that we're up to P2 in the teams. The point situation kind of is what it is, I’m still a bit of a chunk away from Will and Chaz.

“But we’ll just keep focusing on ourselves, like we have been all year. We’re going to be aggressive and go after wins and podiums, and put some pressure on the other guys."

Waters insisted Brown, Mostert and Feeney have the championship on their minds, allowing him to take more risks and race with freedom and without fear.

“They're definitely thinking about the championship, there's no doubt about it,” Waters said.

“Personally, I'd love to be closer to the front, but I’m in a unique position where I've got to be aggressive and win races, and it's fun to race like that.”

Despite parity tensions last year, Waters was a podium contender in Tasmania, only missing out on a trophy in the opener after a last-lap pass by Shane van Gisbergen.

A three-time pole-sitter in Tasmania, Waters is keen to break his Symmons Plains duck, and keep Tickford’s momentum rolling into the enduros.

“I’m pretty pumped for Tassie. I’ve always enjoyed going down there. I love the place and I think the racetrack's really fun to drive around,” Waters said.

“It’s the shortest track we go to, and while there's not a lot to it, it’s still pretty technical and provides some really good racing.

"I think we should be in the mix. Traditionally, we've been not too bad there. Last year, we weren't too bad there.

“The results over the last few rounds has definitely helped morale. All the hard work is starting to pay off, and now we've got to build on that and keep that momentum rolling."
