  • Big chance to take points lead, Perkins Trophy taken away by downpour

In one fell swoop, Broc Feeney lost a chance to win both the Larry Perkins Trophy and take the championship lead due to rain in Melbourne.

Torrential rain led to suspended Supercars, Formula 2 and Formula 3 races in Melbourne, before the weather cleared for the Formula 1 race.

Feeney was in the box seat to claw his way back into the championship picture on Sunday, sitting pretty on pole position with Cam Waters fifth, Will Brown 21st and Chaz Mostert 24th.

However, the rain gods had other ideas, leaving Feeney wondering what could have been.

"Obviously from my side, I'm gutted,” the Triple Eight Race Engineering said.

"I was on pole and pretty much all my rivals that I'm battling in the championship were right at the back.

"So, it was a very good chance for me to claw back points in the championship fight and also to try and win the Larry Perkins Trophy.

“I'm gutted that we weren't able to go racing. We were super consistent this weekend with four poles and unfortunately, we weren't able to get out there today.

"At the end of the day, there was a lot of fans that turned up to watch us, and we didn't get to go racing for those guys.”

Feeney suggested the race could have been restarted, but the decision was ultimately forced by time certainty and the threat of more weather.

“At the time when they red-flagged it, the rain was at its worst — it was raining a lot,” Feeney said.

"However, as soon as we pulled up in pit lane, the rain pretty much stopped. I felt like maybe if we kept going under Safety Car, we would've got racing.

"It felt like it dried up quite a bit on the track there. But look, they've made a decision.”

Feeney has four pole positions and three second place starts to his name, but has one win and two additional podiums. He did, however, join Brown in pushing Triple Eight clear in the teams' championship.

While delighted with his one lap speed, the 22-year-old wants better execution come race day, given he lost two races in Melbourne due to suboptimal race starts.

“For me, getting four pole positions and three second place starts to start the year is awesome,” he said.

"I've had a few things not go my way, especially at Sydney and then this weekend, just not being able to convert at the right time. But the qualifying pace is awesome.

"We probably need to not so much work on the race pace, but just on executing when it comes to race time.”

The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship will resume in New Zealand at the ITM Taupō Super 440 on April 11-13. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
