James Golding has emerged unscathed after a scary incident where his car came to rest in pit lane ablaze at the Destination NSW Sydney Test Day.

The #31 PremiAir Racing Camaro was running 15th at the time of the incident, when Golding returned to the lane at the completion of his 18th lap.

Whilst transiting the fast lane on his way back to the PremiAir garage, the car suddenly burst into flame, with the 29-year-old leaping out unscathed.

The cause of the fire is unknown at the time of publication. PremiAir released a statement, saying:

During a flying lap, as car #31 exited the last corner onto the main straight, it caught fire. Jimmy immediately went straight into the pit lane.

We are thankful to report that Jimmy is 100% fine. A lot of work lies ahead to repair the car, and the cause of the incident is currently unknown.

We will update you once we have more details.

Golding enters 2025 off the back of a personal best campaign last year, claiming his first career pole position and podium in Darwin and Sandown respectively, and finishing seventh in the standings.

Speaking to select media, including Supercars.com, Golding said: "Going into the last corner, I went into that fast right, then turned through the left, and as I'm halfway into the second-to-last corner, it's gone up in flames in the inside of the car on the left side luckily, not my side.

"It made a puff, not an explosion, then there's flames and I just pressed the extinguisher straight away when I was at the apex of the corner.

"I was nearly going to pull over and get out, it wasn't getting dramatically worse; it was still on fire, but not needing to get out instantly, I'm just trying to get it back to an extinguisher. I got it back to pit lane, and then got out.

"I'm all good... [if it was out the back of the circuit], it probably would be burnt to the ground, if I didn't drive to pit lane.

"They did a few tests on me to make sure I was all good, make sure I didn't breathe in too much smoke or gas from the extinguisher."

After Wednesday's Destination NSW Sydney Test Day, Supercars will return to Sydney Motorsport Park for the opening race of what is set to be the most action-packed season in Supercars history.

Race 1 takes place on Friday night, with Race 2 on Saturday night and Race 3 on Sunday afternoon. Tickets for the February 21-23 event are on sale now.
