Refuelling drama caps off championship-ending weekend for Chaz Mostert
  • Chaz Mostert's title bid comes to an end after refuelling dramas

  • Walkinshaw Andretti United used Ryan Wood's fuel tower in last scheduled stop

  • Mostert now 309 points behind leader Will Brown with 300 points to fight for in Adelaide

Chaz Mostert's quest to be crowned the 2024 Repco Supercars Champion has been brought undone by a refuelling disaster this afternoon at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

Having been in contention for a win all race long, Mostert came in for what was scheduled to be his final stop on lap 55, however it quickly became apparent that the stop had not gone to plan.

Indeed, 10 laps later Mostert came back in, having not received enough fuel to reach the 85 lap distance after a bungled fuel stop.

A mix-up at Walkinshaw Andretti United saw the refueller use Ryan Wood's fuel tower as opposed to Mostert's, and with Wood having come in for his last stop there wasn't sufficient fuel.

The extra stop completely blew any chance of a strong result for Mostert, who tumbled back down to 14th before fighting his way back to 11th at the finish.

With Will Brown finishing second to Brodie Kostecki, Mostert has now officially bowed out of the 2024 title race, now sitting 309 points behind Brown with 300 points on the line at the VAILO Adelaide 500.

This weekend was a hammer blow to Mostert's 2024 campaign, with a gear position sensor failure cruelling his chances yesterday on his way to a finish of 10th.

Although he has claimed three wins this season, it has been an up-and-down season for Mostert, who had a wheel fall off in New Zealand, a weekend of struggles in Darwin, and a quiet enduro campaign.

After Mostert's refuelling dramas today, WAU team owner Ryan Walkinshaw was a frustrated figure in pit lane, admitting that Chaz had done everything to keep his title hopes alive in a frustrating weekend.

"Chaz came in and unfortunately the guys put the wrong fuel tower in his car, put Woody's in instead of Chaz's, so didn't get much fuel in the car," Walkinshaw said.

"So Chaz has had to come in and finish off his fuel to get the minimum drop.

"It's frustrating, obviously yesterday was a tough day. Yesterday's issue we had with Chaz was something out of our control, but today's issue was very much within our control.

"It's a bitter pill to take, and we've got to make sure this doesn't happen again. I'm just bitterly disappointed for Chaz, he was having a great race, and it's not his fault that this has happened."

The 2024 Repco Supercars Championship concludes at the VAILO Adelaide 500 from November 14-17. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
