Five champions feature in first batch of Super2's greatest

The first eight drivers in the 25 best Super2 drivers in 25 years countdown have been revealed.

The countdown began across Dunlop Super2 Series social channels on March 4, with drivers being revealed every two days in the build-up to Round 2 of the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series at the Tasmania Super 440 in May.

Spanning the entire history of the Supercars development series from it's first season in 2000 right through to the current 2025 season, the first seven drivers to feature in the countdown are highly credentialed.

The eight drivers in question have a combined 38 race wins, 21 race wins, and five Super2 championships between them.

Here are the first eight drivers in the 25 best Super2 drivers in 25 years countdown.

25) Matthew White

3 race wins, 1 round win, runner-up in 2000 and 2003

A staple of the first seasons of the development series, Matthew White never quite broke through to claim a development series crown, but finished as runner-up in both 2000 and 2003.

Though his days as a driver slowly came to an end as the 2000s progressed, White's impact on the second tier continued to be felt as his MW Motorsport operation became one of the top teams in Super2.

Jonathon Webb, Dale Wood, Bryce Fullwood, and Thomas Randle all won their titles with MW Motorsport.

24) Owen Kelly

13 race wins, 4 round wins

The most successful driver in the history of the Super2 Series without a championship victory to his name, Owen Kelly was breathtaking on his day.

His 2004 season with Dick Johnson Racing was highlighted by blistering speed, winning seven of the 17 races held, but it was inconsistency that saw him only finish fifth in his most competitive season.

Another notable performance came at Oran Park in 2007, where he took an Image Racing Falcon from a pit lane start to an extraordinary victory in a wet 16 lap affair.

23) Zak Best

5 race wins, 5 round wins, runner-up in 2021, 2022, 2023

Forever the bridesmaid, but never the bride, Zak Best was unquestionably one of the best drivers of this decade, but doesn't have the championship silverware to show for it.

Debuting in 2020 in an MW Motorsport Nissan, it was a move to the Tickford fold in 2021 that really saw the Victorian's stocks rise, claiming consecutive runner-up finishes behind Triple Eight duo Broc Feeney and Declan Fraser.

A move to Anderson Motorsport for 2023 provided him with his best opportunity at the title, leading the championship with the privateer operation before a crucial penalty saw him lose out to Kai Allen in an Adelaide title showdown.

22) Dale Wood

4 race wins, 1 round win, 2013 champion

The first champion in our list, Dale Wood made a name for himself right from the outset with Tasman Motorsport affiliate Greg Murphy Racing, winning the 2007 Mike Kable Young Gun Award following his first year in Super2.

Wood was a model of consistency in his four Super2 seasons, with seventh in his rookie season his worst finish in Super2, but it was his final year in the development series that was his crowning glory.

In his only season away from the GMR stable, Wood claimed the only Super2 round win of his career at Winton, and was a top 10 finisher in every race to claim the title with MW Motorsport.

21) Tony D'Alberto

2 race wins, 2 round wins, 2007 champion

Now a familiar part of the Dick Johnson Racing family in the enduros, it was as a Holden Young Lion that a teenaged Tony D'Alberto made his Super2 debut in 2003.

A move to the 2002 title-winning Independent Racing Cars for the next season saw D'Alberto claim eighth in the championship, but it was with his family Tony D'Alberto Racing operation that he took the next step.

D'Alberto became a podium contender in the 2005 and 2006 seasons, before taking another step in 2007, ultimately prevailing in a tense Phillip Island title decider against Michael Caruso.

20) Zach Bates

2 race wins, 3 round wins, 2024 champion

The current champion might have only been in the category since 2023, but Zach Bates has established himself as the top dog of the current crop of young Supercars talent.

The most prolific race winner in the popular and ultra-successful Toyota 86 driver development category, Bates was snapped up Walkinshaw Andretti United for their Super2 return in 2023.

A learning year saw Bates continually improve through the year, finishing fifth in the standings whilst teammate Ryan Wood stole the spotlight with a speedy rookie campaign.

With Wood graduating to main game in 2024, Bates stood up as WAU's leader, and capitalised on Kai Allen's misfortune to fend off a hard-charging Aaron Cameron for the 2024 crown.

19) Chris Pither

4 race wins, 2 round wins, 2018 champion

Chris Pither was a long-time Super2 competitor over several stints, starting in 2006 in a Brad Jones Racing-prepared AU Falcon, finishing 11th as a 19-year-old.

The Kiwi would start to become a front-runner in a second stint with BJR in the mid-2010s, finishing fourth in 2014 in a Commodore, before moving to MW Motorsport and finishing fifth in 2015 in a Falcon.

After an ill-fated stint with Super Black Racing in the main game in 2016, and an Erebus co-drive in 2017, a then-31-year-old Pither returned for a final Super2 season with Garry Rogers Motorsport in 2018.

Pither equalled the record for most pole positions in a single season, claiming six pole positions in 12 qualifying sessions, and outlasting fellow veteran Paul Dumbrell to win the title in Newcastle.

18) Thomas Randle

5 race wins, 3 round wins, 2020 champion

A popular member of the Supercars paddock with Tickford Racing today, Thomas Randle won the truncated 2020 Dunlop Super2 Series at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Randle returned to Australia having attempted to break into Formula One, finishing fourth in 2016 British F3 and having competed in Formula V8 3.5, and winning the 2017 Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand.

The 2014 Australian Formula Ford champion claimed the Mike Kable Young Gun Award in his rookie year in 2018, claiming a round podium in Perth on his way to claiming 11th in the standings, before improving to third in his final Tickford Super2 year in 2019.

Randle was dominant in an MW Motorsport Nissan in the seven-race 2020 season, claiming three wins and four runner-up finishes, all whilst battling testicular cancer in a remarkable display of resilience.

The 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series will resume at the Tasmania Super 440 on May 9-11. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
