Aaron Cameron has broken the Super2 qualifying lap record to claim his first career Dunlop Series pole position on Saturday at the Repco Bathurst 1000.

After losing second place in yesterday's race after a power steering failure in the closing laps, Cameron blazed to a sensational 2m04.7010s to beat Zak Best's pole record from the corresponding session last year.

However, Brad Vaughan was half a tenth away from claiming a Super2 pole sweep, and will line up on the front row once again for Tickford.

Cameron gave the Kelly Racing crew something to cheer about after a tough weekend to date, with Mason Kelly being ruled out for the weekend after a heavy crash on Thursday.

"I saw Brad Vaughan's lap yesterday doing a 2:04 and I was like, "Holy heck, how the hell do you do that?" said Cameron.

"I thought I get held up a little bit on my lap, but today we made some big changes overnight.

"After the power steering issues yesterday, we really had to toolbox it to make sure it doesn't happen again, and we didn't know what car we were going to roll out with then.

"It was actually the best the car has been all weekend and I could actually have a crack. The steering's been locking out through The Grate all weekend, but this time you could nearly take it flat, so it was a lot of fun.

"With Mason's unfortunate accident, and with that yesterday, we're trying to get the pep in our step again, and this will hopefully give us all some spirits and we can try and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

"We'll even try and get ourselves a race win dare I say it, you never know, but let's just try and get some points."

Behind the front row, Rylan Gray qualified third to make it two Tickford cars in the top three, ahead of Jarrod Hughes and championship contender Zach Bates.

Bates, who clawed back 48 points on Allen yesterday, set the benchmark on the first run, setting an impressive 2:05.7593s on his third flying lap before boxing for his final run.

Bates, who clawed back 48 points on Allen yesterday, set the benchmark on the first run, setting an impressive 2:05.7593s on his third flying lap, but ended up 0.2980s off the pace.

The top 10 was rounded out by Lochie Dalton, yesterday's race winner Jobe Stewart, Max Vidau, Cody Gillis, and Campbell Logan.

Eggleston Motorsport continued to work on Kai Allen's bruised Commodore following his massive qualifying crash yesterday, having elected to not change the engine following yesterday's race.

Whilst the engine was on song in qualifying, the session was more of a systems check for Allen, who will start from 18th and last having not set a representative time.

After crashing out of the lead at The Cutting on the last lap of yesterday's race, Thomas Maxwell was ruled out of today's qualifying session, as he awaits for a part to arrive from Melbourne for this afternoon's race.

That left just Cody Burcher and Bailey Sweeny to compete in Super3 qualifying, the latter doing his first qualifying session at Bathurst having missed yesterday with an engine drama.

Burcher claimed pole in 13th outright on a 2:06.0601s.

Race 10 of the 2024 Dunlop Series begins at 4:05pm AEDT.
