Tickford Racing found a positive end to a Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperSprint weekend of woe, says Cameron Waters .

Waters crossed the line in sixth in Sunday’s race 22, having made up six positions during the 32-lap sprint.

It came after Waters slipped from seventh to 13th in Saturday’s night race, before finishing 13th again in Sunday’s opening sprint.

Saturday’s result ensured Waters dropped from third to fifth in the points standings.

Chaz Mostert and Will Davison, his closest rivals, both finished in the top 10.

Complaining of a lack of pace since rolling out of the truck for Friday practice, Waters believes his team has turned a corner.

"I’m happy with that race," the Monster Energy Mustang pilot said.

"Obviously, sixth isn’t where we want to be, but it’s a lot better than we have been for the last two races.

"Out of the truck the car has really struggled; whatever we threw at it, it wasn’t really responding.

"We threw some really big things at it in the race then and it’s starting to feel like its old self again, which is nice.

"It felt racy, and we moved forward, so hopefully we have something to work with.

"Every race we are trying stuff. We were pretty slow, and you can’t keep doing the same stuff.

"We had to try something big for the last one and find the direction; I think it paid off for that one.

"All the cars are doing different stuff but that’s by far the best the car has felt.

"So some positives out of a shit weekend."

Sunday’s finale saw Waters finish ahead of Mostert for the first time of the weekend.

Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Mostert climbed three spots to finish seventh, three seconds behind Waters.

The change in pace marked a key turnaround for Tickford considering the team focused on race pace and tyre degradation in Friday practice.

"I think my qualifying car will be much better after driving that [car in the race]," Waters said.

"It didn’t matter if it was qual or race car, it was ordinary but that was a step forward which is nice.

"We will put all the info in a pot and work out what it needs and come back next week, and we will definitely bounce back

"A lot better than what I have had, we did a little bit different strategy to some other guys; all in all, the car was much nicer and looked after its tyres.

"We didn’t have any rats like the other teams complained about, so that’s positive."

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will resume next weekend at the ARMOR ALL Sydney SuperNight.

Tickets for the three upcoming Sydney events are on sale now.
