Will Brown, Broc Feeney boast 4.0, 5.1 average finishes
Brown, Feeney combine for nine wins, will fight for title in Adelaide
Triple Eight clinched teams' championship in Bathurst
Will Brown and Broc Feeney are the two drivers left in contention for the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship, and both are in title-winning form when stacked up against the history books.
Brown leads Triple Eight Race Engineering teammate Feeney by 180 points heading to the VAILO Adelaide 500, with a maximum of 300 to win across the final two races of the season.
The former has won just four of 22 races, but has claimed at least one podium at each round so far, putting him in the box seat not only for the title, but for a 40-year first.
Thanks to his remarkable consistency, Brown heads to Adelaide with a superb 4.0 average race finish, which is better than 13 title-winning efforts since 1992, when championships were first contested over multiple races at a single round.
Feeney has more wins and pole positions than Brown, and boasts an average race finish of 5.1, which is the same number reigning champion Brodie Kostecki ended 2023 on.
The Triple Eight drivers have finished all 22 races so far. Of 24 full time drivers in the field, 12 have a 100 percent finishing record so far this year: Brown, Feeney, Chaz Mostert, James Golding, Thomas Randle, Nick Percat, Will Davison, Andre Heimgartner, David Reynolds, Mark Winterbottom, James Courtney and Macauley Jones.
Both Brown and Feeney have flirted with danger this season, Brown infamously colliding with Reynolds on lap 1 of the Townsville finale, while Feeney was sent into a spin in New Zealand and Tasmania.
Obviously, the driver with the highest average finish usually wins the title, but Brown could do so despite winning fewer races than a rival, a feat last achieved by Jamie Whincup in 2017.
An Adelaide clean sweep could see Brown end 2024 with an average finish of 3.75, while Feeney could max out at 4.75.
Disregarding did-not-finishes (DNF) and did-not-starts (DNS), Hall of Famer Craig Lowndes won his 1998 and 1996 titles with average finishes of 2.1 and 2.2, with Scott McLaughlin's 18-win 2019 season featuring a 2.3 average finish.
The best average finish by a driver who completed all races in a season belongs to Mark Skaife, who kicked off 1994 with six straight wins, and ended with the championship and a 2.5 average.
Ultimately, the number will be moot come Sunday afternoon once Brown or Feeney walk away with the trophy, although it is a mark of both drivers' and their team's consistency and ability to extract results where others can't.
Chaz Mostert, who fell out of mathematical contention in Surfers Paradise, has an average finish of 6.05 through 22 races, while Cam Waters has an average of 6.43, disregarding his DNF at Albert Park.
Brown and Feeney will commence their quests to clinch the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship at the VAILO Adelaide 500 on Thursday November 14. Tickets are on sale now.
